Electric field lines in a coaxial cable.

Before we go on to simulate cyclotrons or particle accelerators , it becomes quite essential to have sufficient knowledge of magnetic fields and electric fields due to a charge (or magnetic dipole) in a spatial configuration .

A basic understanding of the spatial evolution of electric voltage and field/flux can be inferred from a coaxial cable.

In such configuration, the inside cable  transmits at a given voltage say Vin, and the outer cable is grounded. The equi-potential surfaces around the cable are plotted using 2D Cartesian coordinates.

Co axial cables are used to transmit high frequency signals with less interfering effect of extrenal electromagnetic fields. They usually have BNC terminal connectors.
